What is it that makes children drop out of school at later ages?
I don't really have the answers for that. I have guesses and really I
feel that parental involvement is a very strong factor in that. Right
now, we are working on a program to try to increase parental involvement
of those children. Mentors, again, as my husband spoke about, is another
key factor in the success of those children, and of course language. I
would like to say that my primary job is to teach those kids skills and
concepts. Regardless of what language they speak, that is my primary job.
And I want to do it in the way that they are going to be most successful,
and that is why for those Spanish-speaking children, it may be in their
language. I am not, not teaching them English; I am teaching them English,
but my primary job is to teach them those skills. It is a bonus for these
children that are learning each other's languages and not only learning
each other's languages, but also sharing each other's cultures.
